Many of today’s top executives will inevitably be defined by their responses to the challenges associated with COVID-19. That’s true for elected officials and company CEOs, of course, but also for higher education leaders. A recent report from Alera Group indicates that higher education is likely to be one of the sectors most affected by the health crisis, so the heads of colleges and universities may find themselves under a particularly harsh spotlight as they guide their institutions throughout the pandemic.

That said, effective leadership in times of uncertainty often looks similar across every type of organization. Dr. Daniel Diermeier, former provost at the University of Chicago and incoming chancellor of Vanderbilt University, has dedicated much of his work to studying crisis management. In a recent white paper, he made it clear that the tools leaders need to successfully navigate a crisis apply to higher education just as much as any other sector.

To uncover more insights on how leaders at colleges and universities can work through COVID-19, Collegis Education recently hosted a conversation between Dr. Diermeier and Collegis Education board member J. Michael Locke. The resulting discussion helped clarify the key elements that define great leadership through challenging times and highlighted specific considerations for higher education institutions going forward.
